Class Description

Description

What you'll learn in this philosophy class:

This course undertakes a close reading of Plato's 'Symposium,' a work of enduring philosophical significance that masterfully explores the multifaceted nature of the Erotic. Situating ourselves in the rich tapestry of Athenian dialogue, we critically engage with the text's nuanced examinations of erotic desire and its intersections with sexuality, gender, and the idea of the beautiful.

The ‘Symposium’ is written in the form of speeches about 'Eros' given at a banquet at which Socrates, his friends, and eventually his male lover are in attendance. Our inquiry begins with an analysis of these speeches that address the nature of the erotic. Central to our exploration will be the progression from more 'common', often sexual, erotic desires towards a more transcendent appreciation of beauty. We will ask: How are we to consider the intricate interplay between human desires, sexuality, and the eternal idea of beauty? What roles do femininity and masculinity play? How does Socrates' interaction with his lover affirm, complicate, or reinforce the argument he relates?

The seminar is designed to be informative for people unfamiliar with philosophy as well as readers already familiar with the 'Symposium'. All our courses maintain an atmosphere of respectful communication. Through close textual readings and seminar discussions, we aim to touch on the depth and breadth of Plato's thought on the Erotic and the Beautiful.
