Class Description

Description

Nonfiction Book Proposal is a comprehensive, detailed and intensive four-week course incorporating expert lectures, hands-on proposal development assignments, peer review, constructive feedback and guidance from publishing professionals. This course serves both beginners approaching their first book and experienced writers seeking a refresher in current proposal practices, expectations and approaches in the contemporary publishing industry; detailed course structure and learning outcomes appear in the detailed syllabus section below.

Perhaps you have already completed your nonfiction manuscript and now need to present it effectively and compellingly to publishers and literary agents for consideration and acquisition. Alternatively, you may have developed an intriguing concept, explored a unique angle or begun preliminary drafting of your book idea. Before proceeding further in your extended writing journey and significant investment of time, energy and resources, understanding precisely how nonfiction books move from a writer's initial conception to successful published form proves invaluable and essential for maximizing your success and publication likelihood.

In today's traditional publishing industry and competitive marketplace, the vast majority of nonfiction books find their way to publication through the proposal and pitch process rather than through submission of complete, finished manuscripts. A strong, compelling, well-crafted nonfiction proposal, typically between 20 and 50 pages in comprehensive length, demonstrates your book's genuine marketability and strong commercial appeal to distinct audiences, establishes your credibility, expertise and authority as an author, articulates your book's distinctive contributions and unique value proposition to readers, and proves convincingly that a substantial and engaged audience exists for your work. Literary agents and publishing house acquisition editors make acquisition decisions primarily based on the strength of proposal materials rather than on reading completed manuscripts in full.

This comprehensive, hands-on course teaches you how to construct a compelling, persuasive, professional nonfiction proposal that resonates powerfully with publishers, agents and acquisition editors in your genre. You'll learn proposal structure and all essential components required by the publishing industry, study exemplary, successful proposals across multiple genres and categories that have sold, develop your own comprehensive, tailored proposal with expert feedback at each development stage, understand the critical relationship between proposal quality and publishing success likelihood, and learn submission and pitching strategies. Whether your goal involves traditional publication with established major publishers, hybrid publishing approaches combining elements of traditional and independent publishing, or independent self-publication with full creative control, a well-crafted, comprehensive, professional proposal provides an essential foundation for success and increases your publication likelihood and opportunities significantly.

  • If you need to withdraw after your class has started (or two business days before it starts), you won’t receive a refund, but you’re welcome to a Gotham credit less the price of Week 1 and your $25 registration fee, but we need to hear from you three business days or more before Week 2 meets for that to happen. After that point, no credits are available.

One-day and Zoom Intensives:

  • You may reschedule a One-day or Zoom Intensive one time, if you notify us two business days before the class begins. After that first reschedule, there is a $25 rescheduling fee.
  • If you notify us three business days or more before your class begins, rescheduling is free. If you notify us less than three business days before your class begins, there is a $25 rescheduling fee. If you don’t notify us until after your class begins, we cannot reschedule you.
  • You may get a refund (minus a $50 fee) if you notify us three business days or more before your class begins.

  • If you simply don’t show up and don’t notify us in advance, you forfeit your money.

A few more things:

  • Credits are valid for one year and cannot be changed into refunds down the road.
  • Simply not attending class or notifying the instructor does not mean you've officially withdrawn.
  • Some exceptions are made on a case-by-case basis for medical emergencies with a doctor's note.
  • Refunds take up to six weeks to process.

Please understand, we can't issue a refund after classes have started, even if you miss your first class. Similarly, we can't offer you a credit one day before your second class or after that. We understand that other obligations get in the way of attending class, but these policies allow us to get other interested writers into class early enough to have a good experience, and this allows us to offer our classes at a reasonable price.

Important Notes:

  • Students are allowed to join a class in the second week.
  • Only those who pay the tuition in full can be guaranteed a place in class.
