Class Description

Description

Street photography has become increasingly popular, particularly as photographers gain access to superior-quality cameras integrated into mobile devices and specialized high-resolution digital cameras. The ease of camera availability and widespread camera ownership raise important considerations regarding ethics, privacy in public spaces, and the distinction between a casual snapshot and a genuine street photograph.

This practical, hands-on course explores the distinctive characteristics that define the street photography genre. We serve as your instructors and mentors as you develop compelling photographs that surpass the typical snapshot in creativity and sophistication.

Initially, we'll convene on Zoom several days before the in-person session, where you'll receive professional techniques and insider tips, and we'll address privacy considerations specific to street photography. This online session will be recorded so you can review it if you're unable to attend the live presentation.

Subsequently, we'll gather in person and work together, with our coaching and suggestions, photographing outdoor scenes near the White House and surrounding Lafayette Park.

You'll produce photographs that express your individual artistic perspective while utilizing camera equipment you already own and have configured for street photography purposes.

Course subjects include:

  • Essential techniques and camera settings optimized for street photography
  • Expert methods and secrets for recording striking and memorable images
  • Techniques for making engaging photos using timing, observation, thoughtful composition, and mental preparation
  • Live photographic practice and image creation
  • Ethical considerations and privacy regulations for street photography
  • Session for reviewing and analyzing student photographs with instructor feedback

Suggested equipment: A DSLR or mirrorless camera with manual controls and focal lengths within the 28mm to 70mm range. Smartphone cameras are also suitable.
