Chinatown is one of the most photographically rich and visually dynamic neighborhoods in the city, and this Digital Photo Academy session gives you the time, guidance, and compositional tools to capture it at its most compelling.
From the moment you arrive, the location rewards attentive photographers: brilliantly colored murals that function simultaneously as images in their own right and as vivid, energetic backdrops for portraits; elaborate temple facades with layered architectural detail; the constant motion of street vendors, market stalls, and foot traffic that creates endless opportunities for decisive-moment street photography; and quiet alley scenes that offer a completely different register of the neighborhood's character.
Your instructor will work with you on-site to help you see and frame all of this with greater intention and skill. You will practice applying the rule of thirds, explore how leading lines move the viewer's eye through a composition, and experiment with negative space to create images with genuine visual impact. The goal is not just to take photographs of interesting things, but to make compositional decisions that transform interesting subjects into genuinely compelling images.
This session is part of the Digital Photo Academy's Composition in the Field series, which operates across more than twenty cities throughout the United States and Canada. Each class begins with a focused discussion between your instructor and the group, covering the compositional principles and technical considerations most relevant to the specific venue. You then move through the location together, shooting, discussing your results, and receiving personalized guidance from your instructor throughout the session.
You will leave with sharper images, a stronger compositional eye, and a set of practical skills that will improve your photography everywhere you take a camera, from travels abroad to celebrations at home.
Please note: If a class must be cancelled due to weather or circumstances beyond our control, we will work with you to reschedule. A $25 transfer fee applies if you need to move to a new date without at least three days' notice before the scheduled class.
