Class Description

Description

What you'll learn in this dye class:

Learn the ancient Japanese art of Shibori or indigo tie-dye. First students will learn techniques for tying, folding, and dipping your fabric. Then students will learn how to prepare a vat of indigo.

I will go over 30 shibori folds and binds to give you a full understanding of the resist process.

Due to social distancing this workshop will be a virtual workshop. I recommend setting it up in a place where you can get a little messy (due to the nature of indigo). If you can't go outdoors you can put paper or plastic down to protect the floor (that's what I do in my Brooklyn apt). If you can't set up and want to watch the demo, that is ok. Each student will get a PDF with instructions after the class.

Please reach out to [email protected] for more information regarding the Indigo kit (please allow for delivery time if you want to participate)

All skill levels are welcome. You can choose to dye along with me or just observe if you don't have all the materials. Multiple pieces can be dyed in the vat and I would encourage you to invite friends to share supplies.

Note: Dyes are permanent if they get on your clothes, so please dress accordingly.

The class met my expectations. It was very well presented the instructions were easy to follow. We had excellent examples of the finished products. So I was able to see that the task is dooable. Catherine was very knowledgable of her subject.

Catherine did a great job explaining the process. I’ve did a lot of dyeing during the summer of 2020 using kits. She gave me confidence to move on to mixing my own batch. The folding was really helpful. I would take other classes from her.

The class was so fun! I took it with a couple of my nieces and we had a blast. If I were to take the class again, I would pay attention to Catherine as she goes through the steps of folding and dyeing and then when she sends the link for the class, start the process for yourself. It’s so much easier to pause the video if you need extra time and resume when you are ready. I would highly recommend the class.

The instructor was extremely competent and showed us various ways to create patterns on the cloth before dyeing. It was well worth the 2 hours and she was very accommodating and answered everyone's questions. I would take another class with her anytime. She was awesome!

The class was too fast to follow based on the lack of setup details. Two stations are required: an ironing station with the laptop, then a second dyeing station with the water ready. I was scurrying about trying to keep up because I learn from doing, not from watching. The content was lightning fast and not really classroom-style teaching. If I wanted to watch a recorded video to learn, then I would have gone to YouTube. I signed up for a live class to follow along. There were several items that were not included on the supplies list like a drying rack, clean pennies, large paint sticks, and a respirator mask. The class materials should also recommend a number of items to dye. For instance, if there are 20 folds demonstrated then 20 towels should be recommended. I ran out of towels and had to use these napkins with a super thick seam that did not fold well. Avoiding thick seams is another tip for prep. The type of rubber bands was also important. Just really imprecise on the setup and materials list. It was a bummer to take the class as a result.

I got this class as a Christmas present for my brother, sister in law, and SIL's brother and we really enjoyed doing the class together! Highly recommend having some practice pieces of fabric on hand before going all gung ho on ready made clothes like we did, but we all came out with some really unique pieces that will definitely be a staple in our wardrobe

The instructor was clear, capable and gifted and she showed us many different ways to achieve our Shibori dye results. I don’t assign 5 stars as I felt that the class was a bit rushed and that more time could have been spent with us at the end while were dyeing our fabric. Although the instructor did ask if we had questions, by the time I actually started to use the indigo, and realized that I actually had questions (that needed to be answered in real time,) the class had ended.

Catherine fell in love with the art of Shibori while studying textiles in art school. She was inspired to begin her practice after her first trip to Japan and she dove in. She has a studio in Brooklyn for sewing and dyeing. She sells her items at West Elm, Pottery Barn, and the Brooklyn Flea.
