Chicago City Limits

Chicago City Limits, founded by improvisers trained under Del Close, offers comprehensive training in emotionally truthful and narratively rich improvisation. Through its Improv Core and Music Improv Core programs, students develop the skills to create dynamic, grounded scenes both theatrically and musically.

About Chicago City Limits

The school was founded by, and is still run by, improvisers who trained with Del Close at The Second City workshops in the late 1970's. Del's workshops instilled a few simple but crucial ideas in our company, ideas that still shape how we improvise:
  • The best improvisation is emotionally truthful
  • The best improvisers connect emotionally to the situations and characters they embody on stage
  • The best improvisational training gives students the skills to create rich scenes and to play those scenes in an emotionally grounded way
The school aims to give students complete training in the school's style of emotionally truthful, narratively complex, theatrically presented improvisation. Our Improv Core and Music Improv Core Curricula are designed to build the improvisational and musical skills necessary to create dynamic, grounded scenes of the type on display in the school show.

Very fun class. Joe teaches in a step by step way so anyone from any skill level can learn to participate in a improvised scene. He is considerate of the needs of every student in the class.

The instructor was wonderful, very enthusiastic and clear, not condescending and plenty challenging. I had a lot of fun and would recommend it.

I really liked the teacher and the course. It was an open and friendly atmosphere and the teacher was exactly what I wanted-a true pro who not only teaches but was a founding member of this Improv group. I am a prof actor, but the other students were from the teaching world, writers, ballroom dancers-from all walks of life-and it made for a great mix of people to do excercises and develop characters. I would love to take the Improv for Actors class, but the time is not good for me as I work. Hope to take another Sat class soon.
