Class Description

Description

What you'll learn in this literature class:

Join Colm Tóibín, celebrated author of Brooklyn and professor at Columbia University, for a course on three Irish writers and three American writers.

The divided self and the delighted eye—this course explores the idea of internal tension in a text, literature in which there is an argument enfolding, an argument that animates the text; as well as the idea of a double life, or a life that contains opposites, and the power of memory—how uncertain and haunting it is.

The format of each session will be a talk by Tóibín followed by student questions via Zoom’s chat feature.

  • Jul 8: Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest
  • Jul 15: Poems on the death of Robert Gregory in W.B. Yeats’ Collected Poems
  • Jul 22: James Joyce’s “The Dead” in Dubliners
  • Jul 29: Poems from Elizabeth Bishop’s Collected Poems
  • Aug 5: First section of James Baldwin’s Another Country
  • Aug 12: Marilynne Robinson’s Home
